Hello, I want to self host an instance so I’m only beholden to myself and the military forces that watch all. I only have one rule, and don’t care much for moat things, but I’d like to create safe and friendly place for people like me

    I would advise against it.

    • Lemmy can act in mysterious ways
    • Lemmy’s database can act in mysterious ways
    • You don’t sound like you know how computers work
    • The above is necessary to have any reasonable uptime.

      Let’s also add

      • you need to have 24/7 moderation capabilities to filter all the child porn that trolls will immediately try to spread onto your instance

That is actually somewhat less of an issue now that bans and content removal are federating. Kbin is the easiest to abuse at the moment, but, luckily, there aren’t many instances of it.

“Less” is still not “gone” unfortunately. You do still have to be very vigilant because federation from unknown instances intentionally spreading that stuff can and will end up getting garbage on to your server’s hard drive that you might not even notice.

            This would be my concern.

As I understand it lemmy caches data from other instances you/your users utilize as part of federation which means it requires a fair bit of storage to operate and potentially sketchy data could be synced onto your hardware completely unbeknownst to you.

And afaik you are still legally liable for it

It depends on the country you’re in I guess. In Germany, and other countries as well I guess, you’re not liable for stuff others people post on your platform as long as you react to reports and actually remove that shit when it’s brought to your attention. You don’t have to look at your instances media folder 24/7

Yes, it’s possible. It requires some knowledge in server administration though, you can find the specifics at the Lemmy GitHub page.

every comment you make is just supporting that you shouldn’t be trying to self-host an instance. you lack all the knowledge necessary to do so.

if you’re really stubborn about it, your best bet would be paying someone with the proper knowledge to do it for you.

That’s worth considering. How much would it be?

I would like to also create one just to learn how it all works, being that I am as novice as you all think, and would like to learn hands on. But my main concern is founding a haven. That’s the only goal I have.

It’s a feature of Git. Read up on git/GitHub before you try to tackle this.
