  • That’s literally when I did most of my PC gaming. What was even wrong with visiting a website to download a patch? It was way more convenient to update at your own leisure instead of having to log onto a service that would randomly install updates every week before you could even start the game up like nowadays.

You could even save the patches locally and when you had to reformat Windows, you could have your games installing before you even had the internet back up, hah.

There was literally nothing wrong with downloading updates from a “shitty dev website” because they worked just fine and the worst thing you had to do was decide whether you wanted to run the install wizard or not lol

  • I am not sure I even knew there was a mod log. Tried to find it in my app–didn’t see it, but maybe I just missed it. I wanted to see which comment I made that was making fun of someone’s body, because that -doesn’t- sound like something I’d do unless they’d made an equally annoying remarks first. But it’s good to hear the mod log exists at all.

The usual work flow is that I’ll comment on something people don’t agree with, and multiple (2-5) people will jump on my comment with pointless insults and dumb counter-arguments, and there’s no way I am going to handle more than one person at a time with kids gloves. I’m not even projecting controversial opinions imo (unless they hate cars lawl). I’m usually already on the same side as everyone else, and they just disagree with my interpretation when the whole point of the conversation was to suggest that there might be alternative strategies, instead of doing the same thing they have been doing that hasn’t been successful since the dawn of time (or whatever)

    Ridiculous.

I’m mostly annoyed by the vegan thing I mentioned originally–I’m not vegan, but I do like animals and it’s annoying to see them use the dumbest strategies in the world. They almost make me want to eat more animals just to spite them for being so out of touch.

  • Lemmy might not be the future. The mods are just as oversensitive and overzealous as the Reddit mods. I was banned from the Vegan forum for telling them that they are never going to convince meat eaters to stop eating meat based on animal rights issues, because nobody cared about animal rights like they do. Sorry, but its true. I have also had an entire comment chain deleted from an Unpopular Opinion thread–I don’t even care to go back and check what it was all about, but I can guarantee it was because I wasn’t conforming to popular opinion.

And this is happening to a person that is generally in tune with everything people are saying here–I can’t imagine the valuable insights that we may be losing to moderator action that I never even get to see.

  • I’ve had two ASUS gaming laptops, and both of them began having issues within a year, and the second didnt last more than a couple years total.

The first laptop was one of their enormous ROG 17 inch gaming laptops that looked like it had jet engine exhaust. The hard drive died and the power port broke within the first year, and I had to send it in under warranty. The power brick also died, and I ended up having to replace it myself around the 3 year mark.

Thinking it was a fluke, I ended up buying a smaller, more portable ASUS gaming laptop next which had more of a standard form factor. Maybe six or eight months later, that one suffered some issue that required being sent in for service as well. It began experiencing the same issue about four months later, I’d sent it in for repair a second time for the same issue, and they apparently fixed it.

I got to use that laptop for maybe 1.5 years total before it was completely unusable, in spite of two RMAs.

My current gaming laptop is an HP Omen 17 from 2017, and has been completely stable and reliable up to this day. I love to hate on HP because of their dumb printers, but I’m pretty impressed. I’ll probably end up buying another one, because I will literally never own another ASUS product ever in my life, and there are only so many manufacturers out there who I’d consider for a laptop purchase.

  • I’m in the US and I have a professional career. I’ve had many jobs where I’d travel around the US for short trips, or just have to work in the mountains for weeks on end, followed by trips back home via. plane or by car.

Carting a desktop and monitor around is impractical, and asking for trouble, and certainly wouldn’t fit in the carry-on luggage shelf or under an airplane seat. Additionally, gaming laptops generally have way nicer screens for watching Netflix or YouTube or whatever. I have a 17 inch Omen with a 1070 from like six+ years ago and it’s spent most of its life just being a way to use Excel, watch my favorite shows, and more recently, finally do some gaming.

Now that I’m more settled at home, I’m probably just going to buy a new gaming laptop because they’re so much more flexible than a desktop, and who cares about the most modern, graphically intense games nowadays. There are a few exceptions, but I could stay occupied forever playing games from five years ago, or whatever interesting indie release is coming out tomorrow.
