USA version (pretty sure also UK version) of million has 6 zeros. Billion is the first to be different

Okay, not actually that interesting.

Here’s something that is interesting though: In looking it up myself, I discovered that Billion and Trillion are not universal terms, and while in America 1 billion has 9 zeros, in the UK/ parts of EU, it has 12, and from there the number of zeros increases by 6 rather than 3. So 1 trillion in America has 12 zeros, but in Europe it has 18!

Can we get this number as a percentage of all humans who have ever lived? Seems more impactful that way

The law and the values are indistinguishable. Something being the law does not in any way make it right. So the question is not what the law is, but what it should be. Otherwise you end up arguing in favor of the fugitive slave act. My point is that S Korea is doing a bad thing, not that they aren’t literally enforcing their own laws correctly.

Murder and being against human suffering are 2 wildly different things. I have absolutely no problem taking people at their word on matters of base humanity. Not so for murder. You can tell they’re different because one is a felony. If somebody happens to lie about being a decent person to get out of the military, great, more power to em. Whatever they do instead will be far more useful than fighting some pointless war.

The reason their word is good enough is that they’re not denying a crime, they’re claiming a positive. If everyone started claiming they’re a pacifist, things would get better, not worse.

It is pretty safe to assume that people who claim they value human life are not lying about it. Why isn’t valuing human life accepted by the courts? That’s a fucked up society is what it is.

Saying it is good enough. It’s not unreasonable to think a regular person might be against human rights abuses. You can’t demand that citizens go support your imperialist regime just because they only indirectly show support for human life.

Seems like a pretty small price to pay to prevent murder. In fact, I’d go so far as to say you’re a bad person if you’re not willing to pay that price.

What if you’re right though? Isn’t then a perfectly good time to lie? If you know for sure that the death penalty is evil (which doesn’t seem too big a leap given the facts), then it’s wrong not to lie to people to get them to stop it. Otherwise you’d be saying that your own morality outweighs the humanity of others. If it results in no death penalty, it was a good action. People act like the ends aren’t justifying the means in 99.99% of cases. It is notable specifically when the ends do not justify the means. If the ends are preventing murder, and the means is lying, there is no question whether lying is justified.

Saying that Ukrainians are russian is not remotely the same as what israel is doing. War is not the same as genocide. Putin intends to treat Crimeans the same as Russians. Israel is openly stating that Gazans are animals. Not sure what you mean about forced adoption, they obviously are not taking people’s kids away from them. Calling the war in Ukraine a genocide is simply removing the meaning from the word.

China was putting down a violent strike. Afaik, the workers started the violence. Which is not to say I at all support China’s response,but it’s not at all what US media claimed. The only guns being used were by the workers, for one thing. I commented on TS because that’s the part I knew most about, I’m not going to spend an hour typing up a detailed response to everything people write.

No, certainly random forum folk won’t. But unions certainly could, if we got them enough power. All the strongest people, with leverage over critical infrastructure. But in the meantime, before unions have enough power for that, I think it does basically just fall on random forum folk to get-together IRL and protest against these issues, violently where necessary.

Putin is not currently aiding in a genocide. Biden is. Biden is therefore worse than Putin. This is not remotely debatable. Say what you will of Russias war, it isn’t a genocide, and therefore isn’t as bad as US support of Israel.
