Starting tomorrow I’m off through the new year. What should I do to really bang it up? I was thinking breakfast out tomorrow seems like the way to go.
You can sleep in till late before that too
Can’t sleep in first day - the Mrs book cleaners at 8am. I’m thinking wake, shower, greet cleaners, go eat and be leisurely until they’re done.
No no, wake up extra early, then have a short second sleep! It’s one of my favorite luxuries now.
My favorite local breakfast place is open until 2pm!
Take extra long in the shower.
If you’re in California, that’s quite a luxury!
Breakfast out sounds nice.
I’d also add a daytime movie but the magical thing about having time off is that you can do things while other people work, so there’s not a lot of stress.
Think of something you’d always like to do but it’s too busy, too annoying because of the amount of people. That thing isn’t so bad anymore.
I would buy a jigsaw puzzle on the way home from breakfast.
Nothing says vacation like wasting hours poking at a bunch of jumbled bits of cardboard.
Edit: oh, and I would try to catch a cheap matinee movie. I find it luxurious to enjoy a cheap show in a mostly empty theater.
Don’t dig jigsaw but I am charging my (sadly ignored lately) kindle for the break.
Nice. Sitting with a book is another great way I like to tell myself I’m on vacation. Doesn’t even have to be a good book.

Here’s the way to take a vacation. Most people start the vacation on a Monday and come back to work on a Monday. The smart thing to do is start your vacation on Wednesday and come back to work on a Thursday.
You come into work on the Monday before the vacation starts knowing you only have to work three days, and when the vacation is winding down you know you only have to show up for two days before the weekend.
Most people have limited vacation days. You want to spend 6 vacation days for 8 days off, instead of spending only 5 vacation days for 9 days off? Do you also avoid sales at your favorite stores, because you prefer full price?
Not OP, but with the aforementioned schedule, there are still weekends before and after that are still very valuable. The weekend before vacation could be used to catch up on chores and errands that would be nice to get done before the vacation, plus maybe pack. Then when you get back, your coming home to a clean place and not having to deal with running around straight away. Just be ready for only two days of work. Then another weekend to get rested up before a full week of work.
Two weekends bookending two half weeks of work bookending a week off from work is very nearly the same as a week of vacation and a week of staycation for only 5 vacation days. Sure you can’t go out of town for an extended period with that plan, but I’m kinda ready to go home after 4-5 days away anyway.
12pk of beer and a chair in the sun is how I get into holiday mode.
A good breakfast out is a great way to kick off some time off
What’s your breakfast of choice?
New place opened lately near us…kinda pricy but really good food. 2 eggs over medium, sausage links, hash browns, biscuit and gravy. Fresh-squeezed OJ and coffee/water. Yeah, that’s happening tomorrow.
I would have thought a Vegemite sandwich would have been the default. Since it’s a vacation sandwich you really want to spend the time and care to heat the knife above the toaster and then get the butter to melt into the toast. Then take the Vegemite and ensure a light even spread is applied to compliment the butter with the perfect ratio whilst also being mindful of the humidity it is applying to the toasted bread - you want a light crunch after all!
It’s the simple things done well and with the time required that makes breakfast on a vacation far superior to the standard morning Vegemite sandwich that one might have during a work week. That sandwich is a utility sandwich. The vacation sandwich though, that’s an art form and slice of meditation.
Buy paper plates and commit to generating no dishes for the whole vacation.
